Filming and Photography Policy

The guidelines below apply for photography and videotaping inside the Currency Museum of the Bank of Canada.

1. News Media Photography

The Currency Museum has an open-door policy for news media photographers and reporters who are doing stories or projects that directly involve the Currency Museum and its programs. Advance authorization for such photography or filming must be obtained from the Currency Museum Marketing and Communication Manager at 613 782-7933. We request that press visits be arranged at least one business day in advance to ensure availability of support for the visit. The Marketing and Communications Manager is typically not on site during weekends unless previous arrangements have been made.

2. Documentary-Type Photography for Publication or Broadcast

The Currency Museum permits photography and filming of its premises and activities when the use of the photographs or film involves the Currency Museum directly, e.g., Museum as a tourist or learning destination—part of a piece used to describe our city. Authorization must be obtained in advance from the Currency Museum Marketing and Communications Manager at 613 782-7933.

3. Commercial Photography

The Currency Museum does not permit commercial photography or videotaping on or in its facilities. This includes and is not limited to using the Currency Museum building, grounds or interiors as a set for model photography, or for product photography intended to advertise goods or services unrelated to the Currency Museum. If a need can be met from an existing photograph or image, using either the collection or another Museum source, the procedure and charges for photographic reproduction apply. For more information, please contact 613 782-7931.

4. Amateur Photography

Casual amateur photography and filming are permitted in the Currency Museum facility for visitors wanting a remembrance of their visit. However, to protect the Museum artifacts, flash photography is not permitted.

5. Reproducing anything in the likeness of a current bank note is an offense under the Criminal Code.

For further information, refer to http://www.bankofcanada.ca/en/banknotes/legislation/repro.html.

6. Photography / Filming in the Garden Court

The Bank often gets requests by local photographers and members of the public to use the Garden Court to take photographs (fashion shots, weddings, family photos, etc.). It is considered one of the few indoor venues in Ottawa available for this purpose. The Bank does not charge a fee for the use of the Garden for this purpose.

Members of the public are encouraged to enter into and use the Garden Court of the Bank of Canada during business hours or when the Museum is open. When the Museum and the Bank of Canada are closed, the Garden Court is locked and monitored by the Bank’s security services.

People wishing to hold events or use the Garden Court (during or after hours) for activities which are more involved (e.g., shooting a movie) must contact Diane Hammond, Assistant Director, Communications, 613 782-8482.
