Visiting the Museum
Here, at the Currency Museum of the Bank of Canada, we have answers by the treasure-chest load. We can tell you the stories of how older forms of currency worked, and sometimes how they didn’t work. (Ever try making change for a Spanish doubloon using English pieces of eight?) We can show you examples of coins and notes from Canada’s earliest days. We can lift the veil on why reliable currency is such a vital part of maintaining and growing a modern economy.
One more thing—you can leave your own money at home. The Currency Museum is absolutely free.
