The Currency Museum — A Money Splendoured Thing

In the film It’s a Wonderful Life, Clarence the Angel tells Jimmy Stewart that angels don’t use money in heaven. Stewart drawls in reply that it “…comes in pretty handy down here, bub.”

Any disagreement there?

Not to worry. Here, at the Currency Museum of the Bank of Canada, we have answers by the treasure-chest load. We can tell you the stories of how older forms of currency worked, and sometimes how they didn’t work. (Ever try making change for a Spanish doubloon using English shillings?) We can show you examples of coinage and notes from Canada’s earliest days. We can lift the veil on why reliable currency is such a vital part of maintaining and growing a modern economy.

One more thing—you can leave your own money at home. The Currency Museum is absolutely free.
